Physicians Organizing Committee (POC) began in 1982 when a handful of doctors from a variety of practice settings had seen enough of the destruction of our profession and harm caused patients at the hands of economic and political policies, increasingly outside of our control as individual practitioners.
They decided a new organization and strategy was needed and came together to build an organization that could reset the priorities for the provision of medical care according to medical necessity instead of restrictive corporate HMO, insurance company or government criteria.
POC is a free and voluntary unincorporated membership association. When doctors and other health professionals or organizations join as members, they become eligible for the benefits of the association.

POC is a free and voluntary unincorporated membership association. When doctors and other health professionals or organizations join as members, they become eligible for the benefits of the association.
As a self-help organization, avenues of participation are explained to new members so they can play the greatest role possible in building the benefits of the organization for themselves and other members facing similar problems.
These benefits include everything from advocacy to get a medical insurance company to authorize a medically-necessary course of treatment, to mounting a campaign to reverse government or corporate policies that harm patient care.
Members enjoy the right to bring proposals for collective actions or additions to POC’s programs to the MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS held on the forth Saturday of the month at 13:00 PST at the POC office and are available via video conference for members out of the area.
These meetings include representative delegates from group practices, institutions, medical specialties, ethnic or geographically based medical organizations. Here members discuss problems confronting the profession, potential solutions and make assignments toward realizing decisions. Members participate as they are able. It is only through active membership participation and community support that we are able to accomplish our work.
POC accepts no government funding or other funding that could influence the priorities of the organization. POC is entirely volunteer. There are no paid staff and there is no charge for any of the benefits.
At POC, we back up our members in their efforts to secure individual patient needs, while advancing the ability of medical professionals to improve the overall health of the community.

At POC, we back up our members in their efforts to secure individual patient needs, while advancing the ability of medical professionals to improve the overall health of the community.
Since 1982 our Benefit Program has consistently grown in response to the day-today realities of medical practice, and has built the staying power to be there for you, your patients and the future of our profession.
Benefits are resolved both on a patient-by-patient basis, as well as through categorical approaches to the problems faced by several or more members.
Benefit requests begin with a member explaining his or her analysis of the problem and desired outcome. A POC benefit staff member will then work out a mutually agreeable plan to fill the member’s need, which may include:
• advocacy to curb abusive practices on the part of hospital review committees, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other government agencies;
• legal advice from volunteer attorneys on topics such as interpreting contract language or how to hold HMOs and insurance companies liable for covering medically necessary services for patients;
• medical consults to obtain a second opinion outside health maintenance plan or other insurance company
that is denying necessary care to a patient;
• supplies, medicines and equipment needed for your patients.
Contact us today if you are dissatisfied with the quality of care you are restricted to provide your patients and the onerous demands being placed on you by insurance carriers, hospital management corporations, or government agencies.
